RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Gov. Bob McDonnell says Virginia is battling a historic winter storm, with snowfall approaching 3 feet in northern parts of the state.
During a news briefing Saturday, McDonnell urged residents to keep off the roads and be mindful of their neighbors as snow continues to pile up. He said 33 inches had fallen in Loudoun County and other locations were reporting 2 feet or more of snow.
Approximately 175,000 utility customers are without power.
Michael Cline of the Virginia Department of Emergency Management said there have been at least two reports of building collapses in southwest Virginia. There are no reports of injuries.
McDonnell also warned of the prospect of flooding once the temperature warms.
