HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — A Hampton man who entered an Alford plea to dogfighting and other charges will spend four years in prison.
An Alford plea means a defendant doesn't admit guilt but acknowledges that prosecutors have enough evidence to convict.
Tyrik Clarence Cain was charged in March with animal cruelty, organized dogfighting and possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. The 19-year-old Cain entered an Alford plea in October and was sentenced this week.
Police seized five pit bulls from Cain's home in March. Prosecutors say police also found dogfighting journals, hypodermic needles and other items associated with dogfighting.
