NEWPORT NEWS -- A short in an extension cord sparked fire that damaged a boarding house in Newport News, investigators say.

Smoke and flames were coming from the second floor of the Madison Avenue building when crews arrived around 2:45 a.m.

According to fire officials, one of the residents woke up, spotted the fire and alerted others to get out.

None of the 8 occupants, six adults and two children, was hurt.

They're being helped by the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Red Cross.
