Boarding house fire
NEWPORT NEWS -- A short in an extension cord sparked fire that damaged a boarding house in Newport News, investigators say.
Smoke and flames were coming from the second floor of the Madison Avenue building when crews arrived around 2:45 a.m.
According to fire officials, one of the residents woke up, spotted the fire and alerted others to get out.
None of the 8 occupants, six adults and two children, was hurt.
They're being helped by the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Red Cross.
