PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — New detours are being set for the eastbound Downtown Tunnel in Portsmouth after initial plans caused a miles-long traffic jam.
Elizabeth River Crossings spokeswoman Lauren Hansen tells The Virginian-Pilot (bit.ly/X5qFyh) that more vehicles will be redirected to the tolled South Norfolk Jordan Bridge to relieve Midtown Tunnel traffic.
On Saturday, the original detour caused 3 miles of bumper-to-bumper traffic from Midtown Tunnel into downtown Portsmouth. Jordan Bridge was mentioned as an alternative route.
The change takes effect this weekend.
The eastbound Downtown Tunnel will be closed every weekend through Sept. 7 for renovations, except for Labor Day weekend. More closures are expected through the fall.
The Portsmouth Police Department, state highway department and Elizabeth River Crossings met Monday to discuss the changes. Elizabeth River Crossings is overseeing the tunnel work.
