RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The legal fight over North Carolina's legislative and congressional maps is back in the hands of the state Supreme Court.

The justices heard arguments Monday from attorneys for Democratic voters and other groups who say the boundaries are unconstitutional and should be thrown out. Lawyers for the state and Republican legislative leaders who drew the maps asked the justices to keep them in place.

A three-judge panel of trial judges last summer upheld the maps, but Anita Earls with the Southern Coalition for Social Justice told the Supreme Court the lower-court judges were wrong.

Only two of the seven justices asked questions Monday. They gave no indication when they would rule.
