VIRGINIA BEACH -- A man who was pulled off the side of the road when his car was struck by another driver has died.

State Police said in a news release that 21 year-old Tyler Carnes of Virginia Beach was driving east on I-64 on Thursday night when his 1998 Honda Civic experienced mechanical trouble west of the Twin Bridges and east of the I-264 interchange. He pulled his car off on the left shoulder, activated his hazard lights, and contacted AAA for assistance.

As he waited for help to arrive, a 2001 Ford Explorer ran off the road to the left and struck the Honda Civic. Police say Carnes suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He died on Friday from his injuries.

The driver of the Explorer was identified as 47 year-old Robert G. Horton of Norfolk. He received only minor injuries. Horton was charged with driving under the influence, 2nd offense, and taken to Norfolk City jail where he received a $1500 secured bond.

Hannah Bailey is a longtime friend. She and Carnes met in 9th grade at Tallwood High School.

"It's just really upsetting knowing that someone is that idiotic to get on the road after being drunk. I mean he didn't deserve that, no one deserves that," she said. "He was too young."

Police said they'll present the case to the Commonwealth's Attorney to determine if further charges are warranted.

Bailey went on to say: "I hope everyone is still praying for his family, because I know how hard it is on, you know, his younger siblings and his mom and his dad. Just keep them in your prayers and just remember all the good things he had about him.”
