SUFFOLK -- Police say a Maryland father and son were killed in a small plane crash Saturday afternoon off Turlington Road.
The pilot was 73-year-old Berry Raymond Newgent and the passenger was 51-year-old Thomas Berry Newgent.
A spokesperson with the city of Suffolk confirms the accident happened just after 1:00 p.m. in the 1000 block of Turlington Road and Old Somerton.
When emergency crews arrived they discovered a small, single engine plane had crashed in a field.
Investigators with State Police confirm the pilot and a passenger were killed on impact. The two victims were the only occupants on the airplane.
The pilot was en route to the Virginia Regional Festival of Flight, but officials confirm that it was not a part of the show.
State Police and Suffolk law enforcement responded to the area which is off Carolina Road near the Southside Trailer Park. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified of the crash.
Police say the plane is registered to an individual from Davidsonville, Maryland. The pilot and co pilot have not been positively identified, and Maryland State Police are assisting in the positive identification and notification of family members.
