NEWPORT NEWS -- Police say a 19-year-old was arrested for having a gun at school on Tuesday morning.
Authorities say the principal at Denbigh High School called after a parent identified a student with a gun.
Wayne Raynod King, 19, was taken from class and found to have an unloaded Jimeniz Arms .380 caliber handgun in his pocket, police said. They also say he had several rounds of ammunition in a clip.
Principal Michael Cromartie notified students and staff this morning and he also sent a phone message to all parents regarding the incident, said Newport News Schools spokeswoman Michelle Price.
Police said King indicated he had the gun for protection.
Price noted that the student didn't indicate if the "protection" was needed while he was at school.
King is charged with having a concealed weapon (misdemeanor) and having a firearm on school property (felony).
