CHESAPEAKE -- A car slammed into a Chesapeake home Tuesday morning, hitting the gas meter and forcing people in eight homes into the cold.
It happened around 7:00 a.m. on Seaboard Avenue in the South Norfolk neighborhood.
18 people living on Seaboard and Chesapeake avenues were evacuated for about half an hour until the ruptured gas line was secured.
The home belongs to Tawanna Webb and her family.
She says she and her three children were upstairs when the crash occurred and went to see what'd happened.
"He was walking around in circles just saying 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry,'" she said of the driver.
Police say Matthew Butler, 24, of Chesapeake, was issued a summons for reckless driving and released, Chesapeake Police spokeswoman Officer Dorienne Boykin told WVEC.com.
The Webb family is staying at a hotel for now.
She says they'd remodeled the home just two years ago and now, more work has to be done.
