NEWPORT NEWS -- Police have made two arrests in the death of a 17-month-old child last month.

The child's mother, Lillian Kathryn Callender, 22, and her boyfriend, Michael Christopher Stoffa, 25, are each charged with one count of murder in the commission of child abuse and two counts of felony child abuse.

Newport News Police say a two-year-old girl was treated for injuries over much of her body that were consistent with child abuse.

Authorities learned of the cases when they got a call from Mary Immaculate Hospital's emergency room.  Police spokesman Lou Thurston says the girls were brought to the hospital by the couple.

The younger child was transferred to Portsmouth Naval Medical Center in critical condition and died three days later.

The older child was transferred to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters where she was treated for her injuries and released.

The two-year-old and a 2-month-old male sibling are with Child Protective Services, according to police.

The child's death is the fifth homicide of 2010 in Newport News.
