VIRGINIA BEACH-$160,000 was recently given to help restore the Cape Henry Lighthouse.

The lighthouse is considered to have been the first funded public works project under George Washington and the new United States government.  It was completed in 1792 and sits on what is now Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story.

Preservation Virginia owns and operates the lighthouse. It's open daily, except for certain holidays. A nominal fee is charged.

In all, more than $515,000 for the lighthouse has come from the federal Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century initiative that is part of the new Transportation Alternatives Program.
