NAGS HEAD, NC -- A 12-year-old Fredericksburg boy was hit by a car in Nags Head Thursday night.

Authorities say it happened around 6:30 p.m. near the Melvin Daniels Little Bridge sound access in the 7700 block of South Virginia Dare Trail.

He was crossing with his father in the crosswalk when a car struck him.

The boy was taken to the hospital and then flown to Sentara Norfolk General with serious injuries, Nags Head spokeswoman Roberta Thurman stated.

The driver, a 23-year-old woman from Wanchese, NC, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to yield to the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Authorities say alcohol and speed were not factors in the incident.
