FRANKLIN -- Virginia State Police troopers said 12-year-old Tonashea Sledge died in a car crash on Route 258 south of Sycamore Church Road Saturday morning.

Police said her father, Tony Sledge, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Impala at a high rate of speed at about 11:30 a.m. when he tried to make an unsafe lane change. Sledge lost control of the the car which overturned several times.

Sledge had 6 people in the car with him: Monique Boone (who was in the front seat) and 5 children who ranged in age from 5 to 12.

12-year-old Tonashea Sledge died where the crash happened.

Paramedics took everyone else to area hospitals.

State troopers said speed and alcohol were factors.

Charges are pending upon the case review by the Commonwealth Attorney.

The driver, 45-year-old Tony Sledge, lives in the 20000 block of General Thomas Highway in Newsoms.

Tonashea Sledge lived in the 300 block of Grove Street, Franklin.
