NORFOLK -- The guided-missile destroyer USS Nitze (DDG 94) is returned home to Naval Station Norfolk Tuesday. The ship and crew of approximately 300 enlisted sailors, chiefs and officers deployed from Naval Station Norfolk last November 29th.
In the time since, they have been underway, at-sea for 200 days. "We missed all the holidays with her, so we're going to have to make up for that lost time," said Lamonica Jenkins, mother of one of the Nitze's sailors.
The Nitze's commanding officer, Commander Michelle Nakamura, is very proud of her crew and of the deployment itself, which she characterized as "fabulous." "So, we were actually over in the sixth fleet area of operations, so that's the waters off Africa and Europe," Nakamura said. "And we were helping partner with other nations over there to help enhance the security of the seas."
