MANNS HARBOR, N.C. (AP) -- Authorities say a 2-year-old girl and her 18-month old sister died after becoming trapped in a car after they wandered away from home.

2-year-old Amarilyah Daniels died early Saturday at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters hours after her 18-month-sister Cassandra died.

A 13News investigation uncovered court documents showing the girls' parents were cited for child neglect in the past, and had lost full custody of their children.

According to records, the girls' mother had shared custody.

"I'm still in shock. I'm hurt, angry, disappointed," said Shawn Daniels, the father of Cassandra and Amarilyah.

Relatives tell 13News Daniels celebrates a birthday on Tuesday, the same day a wake is scheduled for his daughters."

Dare County deputies say the girls were reported missing Friday afternoon and found 30 minutes later inside a neighbor's car.

Sheriff's Sgt. Terry Ballance said that the girls were playing outside with their older brother when they disappeared.

Temperatures in the area were around 90 degrees at the time.

Deputies are calling the incident an unfortunate accident, but are continuing an investigation.
