FAMIS helps get word out about health insurance program

Experts think around 23,000 children are living in Hampton Roads who qualify for free or low-cost health insurance and their parents just don’t know about it.
To get the word out, FAMIS unveiled a portrait gallery of Hampton Roads families who are enrolled.
Single mother Eileen Rhoades of Norfolk, a hair stylist, has five children. Until now, they did without seeing a doctor, and if they did, they went to the emergency room. Since enrolling, they've all seen the dentists and her oldest, a high school track star, now has contact lenses.
"With FAMIS, I was able to get her contacts and she said, 'Mom, I can see now!’ It's such a delight that everything is coming through FAMIS. I enjoy it and I thank God," said Rhoades.
The family portraits, taken by photography students at Tidewater Community College, are on display at Norfolk City Hall.
