Students rock out at EVMS Match Day 2008
05:32 PM EDT on Thursday, March 20, 2008
NORFOLK -- Most significant events at medical school are solemn occasions, but not March Day. For Match Day, the EVMS graduating class of 2008 went crazy, with Kiss impersonators, Michael Jacksons, Shakiras and Beatles running around the halls waiting to see where they were headed next.
The theme for this year’s Match Day was “Come as your favorite music star.” The students obliged, including Nicholas Lumsden, dressed as a member of the Village People.
Lumsden graduated from Maury High School and Norfolk State University, and has been a Britt Scholar for all four years at EVMS.
“I hope to match in PA with my fiancée, Kim Smith, and be good doctors,” he said.
Among the students was Jon Mason, son of Dr. Jon Mason from the EVMS Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. The younger Mason hopes to match at UVA, but said he would be happy, “lots of place.”
At the stroke of 1:00 p.m., the graduating class simultaneously opened their letters, and it was as though the mock singers got their MTV award.
“I got York, PA, my top choice,” Lumsden yelled as he hugged his parents and fiancée. “Number one!”
In all, 106 students matched, including Mason, who got his first choice of UVA Medical Center.
They’re all set to graduate in May, and we’re assured the dress code there will be a little more subdued.
