Children with cancer leave lasting impression

02:59 PM EDT on Thursday, August 28, 2008

NORFOLK – Children with cancer made their mark, literally, on a car that’s touring the country to raise money for pediatric cancer.

One by one, the youngsters from Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters put their handprints on the Hyundai.

"I want to help fight cancer so other kids don't have to go through what I did,” said Hannah Kjelvik, a 10-year-old from Hampton. “I want to help raise money to find a cure."

“I’m in maintenance and in March, I’ll be done with my treatment.”

The 5th grader is the "Hyundai Hope on Wheels” regional youth ambassador.

Also Thursday, local Hyundai dealers presented a $40,000 check to CHKD to help fund childhood cancer research programs.

Mark Tysinger knows how important that is.

"My son Blake was here when he was very young and this is a wonderful hospital,” he said.

In all, Hampton Roads Hyundai dealers have contributed $125,000 to pediatric cancer research.

Doctors say research is the key to finding a cure.

"We’re always looking for something a little bit better, trying to improve what we do whether it improves the cure rate or improves the side-effect or just make it a little bit easier on the patient and family to treat. There are many ways that research impacts our patients with cancer," explained Dr. Eric Lowe, a CHKD Pediatric oncologist.
