Compromise calls for 124 beds at DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk
01:59 PM EDT on Monday, August 25, 2008
NORFOLK – Bon Secours and city officials have reached a compromise on the future of DePaul Medical Center.
In an agreement signed Monday morning, there will be 124 beds at the facility, which is twice as many as hospital officials wanted and 10 fewer than the city wanted.
“We’ve clearly heard from the community and they would like a larger presence, as in a larger hospital, so we’re excited about that,” said Bon Secours CEO Michael Kerner.
The state must approve the compromise.
Kerner and the city also announced upgrades to DePaul, including to the emergency room and patient rooms, as a stop-gap measure until 2013, when a new hospital would open on the same campus.
The hospital at the corner of Granby Street and Kingsley Lane currently has 238 beds.
Bon Secours officials last year cited the facility's age and changing health needs as reasons to downsize DePaul. The original plan called for a smaller hospital with 30 to 60 beds.
