RICHMOND -- Two projects in Virginia have received federal grants to link school cafeterias with local farmers and ranchers.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says 71 projects in 42 states and the District of Columbia are involved in the USDA Farm to School grants.

In Virginia, Chesapeake Public Schools received a $34,000 grant to plan such a program with a local farmers market.

And the grassroots Sustain Floyd Foundation got a $98,000 grant to expand an existing program to all schools in Floyd County.

Vilsack says 45 percent of the 2.8 million students served by the grants live in rural communities.
