NORFOLK -- Navigating crowds, security checkpoints, and delayed flights during the holidays can be stressful. This year, many people say they're also worried about getting sick.
Health officials expect to see a rise in swine flu activity because of holiday travel.
At Norfolk International Airport, many passengers packed hand sanitizer in their carry-on bags. Joy Gianvittorio took it one step further and also packed face masks. She's taking a cross-country flight to Los Angeles with her 7-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son.
"I'm in the medical field and it's something that was concerning," explained Gianvittorio. "But we can't be afraid and stay home."
Today Virginia Health Commissioner Dr. Karen Remley gave common sense tips for staying healthy this holiday season.
She said you should use hand sanitizer often, especially after touching commonly used items like security bins. You should also avoid people that are showing signs of sickness on your plane, she said. If there are empty seats, you can ask the flight attendant to change your seat.
Finally, Remley said you should not travel if you're sick. She said you should be fever free without medicine for 24 hours before getting on a plane.
