HAMPTON -- Some voters on the Peninsula will be casting their ballots and getting a flu shot at the same time.

Vote and Vax is put on by the Va. Dept. of Health and several community groups targeting 50+ residents, but the vaccinations are for anyone.  They're providing vaccinations as part of the SPARC initiative, which stands for Sickness Prevention Achieved Through Regional Collaboration.

Older people are at higher risk of complications from the seasonal flu, health officials say. They also vote at a much higher rate, so health officials decided to take advantage of the lines on Election Day.

"That was actually totally unexpected, very convenient actually," said Lewis Delgado.

In Hampton, Walgreens was offering flu shots at the West Hampton Community Center at 1638 Briarfield Road and at Jones Magnet School at 1819 Nickerson Blvd. There is a fee.

Flu season usually peaks in December or January.
