VIRGINIA BEACH - Removing a tattoo that used be considered permanent has gotten easier with the help of a new, cutting edge laser.

That’s good news for Debbie Heaney, who was at the Laser and Cosmetic Center to make her green fairy tattoo disappear like magic.

"She had a real mysterious, provocative aura about her because she had purple smoke around her, so it just… At the time, I loved her," Heaney says were the reasons for choosing the tattoo ten years ago.

Three years later, her life changed and so had her desire to keep her tattoo. Heaney tried traditional removal methods, but the vibrant blue, green and purple inks were too stubborn.

Then she heard about Picosure - a new laser that uses photo acoustic shock waves to break up the ink. It causes less blistering, scabbing and crusting.

Dr. David McDaniel says it’s also faster than the traditional laser treatments.

“Patients typically need fewer treatments and less time than the old technology. But with the added expense of the new laser, you probably end up with about the same total cost," he admits.

For Heaney, Picosure is her road to someday being tattoo-free.

"It had gotten to the point where I just said to my husband, I don't know, I'm just gonna have to cover it up forever because it doesn't look like we're getting anywhere,” she said.

She'll likely have one or two more treatments, before the tattoo is totally gone.

The cost of laser removal is based on several factors, including its size. Dr. McDaniel suggests getting a free consultation to determine if FDA-approved Picosure is right for you.
