VIRGINIA BEACH - Expectant mothers in Va. Beach began receiving the H1N1 vaccine Monday.
The Va. Beach Department of Public Health began giving the immunizations at 8:30 a.m. because pregnant women are considered at high-risk for contracting the virus.
In the first several hours, about 160 doses had been admininstered, officials said.
Seasonal flu vaccinations are also available at the office at 4452 Corporation Lane on a first come, first serve basis.
The clinic runs until 4:00 p.m. or until the supply runs out.
Others will be scheduled as needed and as supplies allow.
Meantime, Tuesday's H1N1 clinic at Hampton University has been postponed because the vaccine hasn't arrived.
The clinic will be rescheduled once the shots arrive.
At Old Dominion University in Norfolk, the Thursday clinic is still on, although the university says it's waiting for its shipment of the vaccine.
Officials say they'll announce Wednesday whether the Thursday clinic will occur.
Over the weekend, President Barack Obama declared H1N1 a national emergency.
Peninsula Health District officials expect that to increase the demand for the vaccine.?? They also say it could lead to frustrations because there may not be enough vaccine for the increased demand.
"The downside is for a while we're going to have less vaccine than we have people who want it," said Dr. Bill Berg.
Hampton Health Department's clinic for preschoolers will be held Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.?at the health department at 3130 Victoria Blvd.
