NEWPORT NEWS – The Red Cross is holding a special blood drive Tuesday because Type O blood is running low.
“39-percent of the population has an O positive blood type. It is the most requested blood type by our hospitals because it can be transfused to patients with all types of blood,” explained Ronald Strong with the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Double Red donations will be accepted as well. Strong explains it’s a new technology which allows donors to safely donate two units of Type O red blood cells at once.
The drive is Tuesday, August 5, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Donation Center at 4915 W. Mercury Blvd.
To donate, you need to make an appointment. Set it up through Kesha Person at 757-838-7320. You also can email her at kperson@hrredcross.org
