VIRGINIA BEACH -- The crew and volunteers of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition are like postal workers -- on the job no matter what the weather.
The family is in California, having a DisneyLand vacation while the army of volunteers is creating the new home.
On Wednesday the foundation was laid. Crews are building the house as energy efficient as possible.
Besides building the home for Beverly Hill, Fred Burdette and their six adopted children, the show producers are hoping to collect 307,000 pounds of food to fill the shelves at The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, The Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula, and Food Bank of the Albemarle. The foodbanks were selected because of the family's commitment to helping the hungry in Hampton Roads.
Fifth grade students from Linkhorn Park collected more than 500 cans for the Extreme Food Drive.
Donations are being taken Wednesday night at the Old Dominion basketball game at The Ted Constant Center.
The clock is ticking on the 106 hours scheduled to complete the new home on Gentry Drive.
