VIRGINIA BEACH-- Scott Taylor captured the Republican 85th District House Delegate nomination Tuesday night.

With all precincts reporting, Taylor won 45 percent of the vote, while Virginia Beach Republican Party Chairman Gary Byler received 33 percent and Jeremy Waters with 21 percent.

"Obviously, I'm very humbled and appreciative that our message resonated with Virginians here in the 85th District, and I'm so super stoked that all of our hard work paid off," said Taylor.

The 85th District House of Delegates race was one of the most competitive races in Hampton Roads in Tuesday’s primary.

According to the Virginia Public Access Project, Byler spent the most on the race, just over $100,000.

"It's been a great day for an election. The voters have had their choice. I'm going to take a week off and then on to put together the Republican victory for (Ken) Cuccinelli and the rest of our ticket," said Byler, who lost 359 votes.

Despite being outspent, Taylor credits his win to his devoted volunteers, some of whom aren’t old enough to vote.

“It was a surprise. We had our tough days and we had our awesome days. When we saw Scott walk through the door (to the victory party), it was an awesome moment. It was months of hard work put into victory," said Lukas Pietrzak, a 16-year-old Taylor volunteer.

"This victory is for them.  It's for the residents of the 85th District and for the future of Virginia," said Taylor.

Taylor will face Democratic William Dale in the general election in November.
