Sailors make time for staying in shape

This time of year, many of us battle with getting back on track with our work-out routine, but a group of sailors are working to keep theirs from ever getting off.
The crew of the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman spoke with 13News shortly before setting out on a seven month deployment, and we hit the gym to find out what inspires sailors with busy schedules to work out.
CTT2 Ashley Bernard and OS2 Natalie Wallace are making work-outs a priority at sea. Bernard has a goal to make it to the gym three times a week, while Wallace hopes to make it part of her every day life.
“I find time,” said Wallace. “First of all, checking with my staff and chain of command, and just making time.”
“Just get up and do it,” said Bernard. “I mean, it’s as simple as that.”
The women are getting help from Assistant Command Fitness Leader, OS1 Ohmahr Fleming.
“There are no excuses,” he said. “You can just walk. That’s exercise. You gotta start somewhere. Just by walking around the house.”
And, being on a ship does not mean getting in a workout has to be difficult. There are fully equipped gyms, and exercise equipment in just about any spot they can fit it in. Even hallway workouts are not uncommon.
There are also aerobics classes offered on the Truman.
“One of the things is, you really need to put it in your schedule,” said instructor Lt. Tobijah Griffin. “If you don’t put it in your schedule, there’s where your excuse is; there’s no time.”
Time is a precious commodity on the ship, and the sailors are making the best use of it.
