"A lot of people want dark lenses. The problem with dark lenses is all that does is dilate the pupil."
As an optometrist, Dr. Hal Breedlove knows about glasses. So he checked out the new HD Vision sunglasses. They claim to be give you ultimate clarity and maximum protection.
Dr. Breedlove and Dr. Jim Zuraf ran them through some tests. "We had some distortion in the lenses. There's not as much as I thought, but there is some optical distortion," mostly in the outer edges.
Next, Dr. Breedlove used an eye chart and light to check for image clarity. He noticed problems with HD Vision in that area. "If you want something to take care of glare, these won't do it. All these basically do is take care of the blue wavelengths of light."
Now they're the slower wavelengths. The ones that tend to scatter, so to speak, as they enter the eye are helped by HD Vision. "You don't have that scattering of light, you don't have that interference that occurs from that wavelength of light, therefore, everything is clearer."
Like most sunglasses on the market, Dr. Breedlove says the HD Vision glasses offer some u-v protection.
So after his tests and trying them himself, what does Dr. Breedlove think?
"They're not going to replace my sunglasses. If they work good for you and you're happy with them, by all means, I hope you enjoy them."
