Boy struck by lightning shows signs of improvement, inspires others
06:18 PM EDT on Wednesday, May 16, 2007
Two weeks ago, 11-year-old Noah Addesa was struck by lightning in the family’s back yard.
His family says the bolt hit a tree and bounced onto Noah. He stopped breathing and his heart stopped beating, but he was revived and is recovering from burns and a head injury.
His family says he's opening his eyes again.
“It was probably the six hours of the darkest night of my soul, just difficult."
Pastor David Adessa was miles away at a conference the night he got the worst call of his life. His son, Noah, had been struck by lightning.
“He was burned most of his chest and then in between his thighs, ear drum blown out and his eye was in bad shape." “He was, of course, dead; no heart beat, pulse, breathing, nothing. Flesh was burning."
Paramedics arrived and somehow revived Noah, but the next day, doctors painted the gloomiest picture yet; Noah had no brain activity.
"There was not going to be any hopeful sign of recovery that he might be vegetative."
With cries of desperation, Pastor Adessa and his wife dove into a deep prayer and then, the unexplainable happened. Noah opened his eyes.
More tests were taken. The results, this time, were nothing short of a miracle.
"The same neurologist who gave us the gloomy report came back the next day with a smile and said, ‘Whatever you're doing, just keep doing. Noah looks like he's going to come out of this. I see a light at the end of the tunnel.’"
And the light as been getting brighter each day, Noah has been taking tiny steps toward recovery.
"He doesn't require a respirator or he's breathing on his own, no oxygen.”
His story is touching people around the world, moving many to faith and prayer, believing miracles do happen.
"At this point, we are in a place of great faith and rejoicing ‘cause he shouldn't be here."
Now, Noah is still in a coma but Pastor Adessa says he has even blinked on occasions and squeezed his mom's hand.
