NORFOLK--Moe’s Southwest Grill is the latest business to agree to set up shop at Wards Corner in Norfolk.
The civic league says the restaurant will be in the Suburban Park Shopping Center at 7500 Granby Street. Meantime, crews are digging the footers for the Harris Teeter grocery store, which will anchor the 71,000 square foot strip mall, and TowneBank could begin construction as early as August.
Wards Corner is a designated enterprise zone so potential businesses receive incentives to move in.
Surrounding residential neighborhoods can't wait for the new and improved shopping area corridor. Residents have seen blighted apartments be torn down and now they're working with the city to get street lights on the dark streets.
"The two targeted areas are just really dark and had seen an increase in strangers parking there at night for short periods, for who-knows-what," explained Kevin Janney with the Suburban Acres Civic League. "This coincided with the tear-down of the old Wards Corner shopping center."
Lights are planned for Galveston and Virginian drives and overgrowth will be cleared to improve the lighting around a couple of existing lights .
Janney stated the city was receptive to the desire for street lights because of its “Lighten up, Norfolk” crime prevention initiative. It advises residents and businesses to turn on lights from dusk to dawn, report burned out street lights and lock vehicles.
