YORK COUNTY -- A mother is charged with child abuse/neglect after York County authorities say they found her two toddlers walking in the street.

It happened May 25 just before noon on Hedgerow Lane in the Foxwood subdivision, Capt. Jim Richardson told WVEC.com.

"They were located and identified. Deputies went to their home and tried to get someone to come to the door for over 20 minutes and got no answer," he said.

A short time later, a relative arrived and the mother answered the door, he added.

Melissa Johnson has been charged with two counts of abuse/neglect of children. Her toddlers, ages two and four, were okay.

There was no information about how long the children had been outside.
