VIRGINIA BEACH -- A Virginia Beach grandmother was run over in her own driveway Monday afternoon. Neighbors say it happened when her young granddaughter got behind the wheel.

The accident happened on Minneapolis Drive in the Windsor Oaks section of Virginia Beach.

Police would only say that they believe a family member was behind the wheel of a green minivan, and would not confirm that a child caused the vehicle to back up.

Neighbors told 13 News the grandchild was in the van as the woman unloaded groceries. They say somehow the girl shifted the van into gear with her grandmother standing behind it.

Police say the woman was responsive after the accident, but she sustained a head injury and was rushed to the hospital. Tuesday afternoon, police said the woman is in serious condition with life-threatening injuries.

Neighbors say the victim was raising her grandchildren after their mother died recently of cancer.
