7/16 UPDATE: Hampton police have arrested 84-year-old David Junior Priddy, in connection with this homicide. He was charged with one count of murder and one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
Neighbors were surprised to hear that Priddy had been arrested for murder.
Doug Veltre says he knew Priddy and often saw him talking with Fleming across the fence that separated their yards.
"I can't believe he did anything like that, because he would walk up and down the streets and talk to everybody, and I didn't think he was a mean person at all," said Veltre.
According to Sgt. Price, 65-year-old Katherine Ann Fleming was found lying on the ground outside her home in the 300 block of Shawen Drive around 7 p.m.
The 65-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound, Price said. She was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Damon Chatterton lives across the street from the victim. He says he was first on the scene after hearing the gunshots. He found his neighbor on the ground by her car, the driver's side door open and the window shot out.
"Laying right on the ground next to her car," Chatterton described.
He called 911 and tried to give CPR until medics arrived.
"It's an absolute shocker she was real, real quiet. She kept to herself," Chatterton said. "Honestly we didn't even know that she was shot until the EMS workers opened her blouse. That's when we found out she had been shot."
Margaret Haywood lives across the street and knew the victim for 30 years.
"It makes you nervous because you don't really know who done it. Until they find out who done it you just kind of stay in fear," Haywood said.
