VIRGINIA BEACH-- Virginia Beach City Councilman John Uhrin is charged with assaulting his wife during an argument on Saturday night.
Police say the incident happened around 11:15 p.m. at their home on Indian Avenue and police say they located his wife driving down Terrace Avenue.
Defense attorney Sonny Stallings said Monday there was never any physical fight and that police filed the charge based on what a neighbor said.
Stallings admitted that the couple did have an argument in their driveway and that they got into a shouting match because he wouldn't go outside and she was in the car honking the horn.
Stallings stated Mrs. Uhrin told him she was never struck and that she plans to go to court Tuesday to get a protective order lifted so her husband can return home.
She did not need medical treatment, police said Monday.
Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms said Monday he's reached out to Uhrin and a spokesperson for Sessoms says he anticipates Councilman Uhrin making a statement before Tuesday's City Council meeting.
"I don't know if he will resign; we will see how this develops. As a husband and a father of three daughters, I find any allegation of domestic violence deeply troubling. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Uhrin family, and I have the utmost confidence that the Virginia Beach law enforcement and legal communities will handle this incident expeditiously and without prejudice," said Sessoms.
