HAMPTON-'Tis the season for shopping and for criminals to take advantage of people distracted by the holiday rush.

Stopping crime is a serious subject and the Hampton Police Department got creative with its safety message this year.

"The video was the idea of our Social Media officer, Leon Robertson. He put it all together, got the role players - the officers who volunteered their time to do it - and even wrote the lyrics," said Cpl. Mary Shackelford.

The video has officers, Santa and a "criminal" dancing and singing and role-playing  to the police version of Jingle Bells. With the holiday season, the department felt the video was appropriate and was a chance to increase partnerships within the community.

"It’s a serious issue we’re talking about. Right now, we have high visibility at our shopping centers to deter crime. This video is a way to let people to know that we want you to enjoy your experience and be safe," Shackelford added.

Since the Hampton Police posted the video on Twitter Thursday afternoon, the department has picked up many new followers - even departments out of state.

The police department also started a YouTube page.

Robertson had been with the Community Relations Unit but recently moved into the Public Information Office full time. It's part of a concerted effort by the department to reach people who live in Hampton or are just visiting.

Videos done by the departments are posted on Twitter and its YouTube page.
