UPDATE 5 p.m.: Barricades have been removed and traffic is flowing again on Warwick Boulevard.
NEWPORT NEWS -- Drivers in the Denbigh section of Newport News are dealing with more than the usual traffic congestion than usual.
Southbound lanes on Warwick Boulevard at Woodhaven Road are closed so crews can make emergency repairs to a sewer line.
Warwick Boulevard is one of the city's busiest thoroughfares.
Hampton Roads Sanitation District crews are making repairs, but police say the southbound lanes likely will be closed until 10 p.m. Thursday.
HRSD spokeswoman Nancy L. Munnikhuysen said crews found a small leak in a 24-inch pipeline was found Wednesday afternoon.
"They were able to stop the leak yesterday afternoon by diverting flows to other parts of our system. To make a permanent repair, it was necessary to close both lanes of traffic this morning," she explained.
Munnikhuysen said crews will work around the clock until the repair is completed.
Detours are in place, sending drivers from Warwick Boulevard onto Industrial Park Drive, then onto Jefferson Avenue to Denbigh Boulevard and back onto Warwick Boulevard.
