ACCOMACK COUNTY -- Bonifilio Velazquez, 36, of Accomac faces a DUI charge as well as three counts of Involuntary Manslaughter after a crash in Keller Saturday night that killed three people.
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said the wreck happened shortly before 8:15 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Lankford Highway and First Street.
A 1999 Chevrolet Venture, driven by Velazquez, was heading north on the highway, crossed the center of the road, and hit a 2012 Nissan Altima head-on.
The driver of the car, 58-year-old Arnette N. Chandler of Roosevelt, New York, died. Two passengers also were killed. They were 55-year-old Diann W. Jones of Exmore, Virginia and 12-year-old A'janae Jones.
"[Velazquez] took my mom and my daughter from me," said Lafont Jones, who brought his kids from Pennsylvania to the Eastern Shore for a family reunion. "I will never get to hug my daughter again. Ever. Never in my life. I'll never see my daughter graduate."
Jones' son, 13-year-old Wysaan Kellam, was thrown from the car by the impact. Paramedics flew him to Children's Hospital of The Kings Daughters for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
Kellam's condition had improved significantly Sunday, Jones said.
Velazquez was not hurt. He is being held without bond at Accomack County Jail.
