RALEIGH, NC- Bill Underwood, president of Mercer University, was high-fiving reporters after his 14-seeded Bears from Macon, Georgia took down the mighty Duke Blue Devils just minutes from their own campus 78-71.
It's the type of scene that March Madness is all about. "Anytime you watch March Madness, there will be clips of us beating Duke." says Mercer junior Darious Moten.
It's also the type of scene the Virginia Cavaliers hope to avoid tonight here at the PNC Arena in Raleigh.
The game was tied at 63 with less than two minutes to go when Mercer secured their lead on a pair of free throws by forward Jakob Gollen, part of a 6-0 run by the Bears.
Duke pulled within three but could get no further.
When it was over, Bears players celebrated on the court. Their orange-clad fans, many of whom were wearing t-shirts that said "The Mercer Way," danced in the stands.
ESPN's Andy Katz told 13News Now that Mercer's win was "definitely one of the top five" upsets he's seen in person.
"I think for Duke, it's right in line with (upset losses) Leigh and at the time, VCU."
That's why they call it March Madness!
