NEWPORT NEWS - A 13-year-old boy was shot in the back as he walked to a family gathering in Newport News.
It happened around 9:50 p.m. Thursday near the intersection 19th Street and Madison Avenue.
"He was shot while walking back to the house for the party," police spokesman Harold Eley told WVEC.com.
Eley says the teen, who lives in Hampton, is expected to recover.
Evangeline Lockhart says her nephew is in ICU.
She said the teen had been outside dribbling a basketball.
"He came into the house and said he'd been shot. I thought he was kidding," she said.
She said family had gotten together for a welcome home party.
Investigators found several shell casings in the area.
