SUFFOLK – The newest boat in the Suffolk Police Department fleet is ready to respond to incidents anywhere in Hampton Roads.
The SAFE boat is designed for police patrols and has been custom fitted to conduct dive operations in search and recovery incidents.
The boat was paid for a grant from the U.S. Coast Guard with the understanding that it would be used regionally, said spokeswoman Debbie George.
When it's not assisting the Coast Guard, the boat will be on the Suffolk waterways almost daily from May 15 through September 15.
"We are very fortunate to have this boat, and a great partnership with the U. S. Coast Guard. Regional initiatives such as this allow both our agencies to maximize our response capabilities. " said Police Chief Thomas Bennett.
The police department has had the boat for about two weeks.
