RICHMOND-- State Senator Louise Lucas says she's found the solution to transportation problems in Hampton Roads.
Lucas has proposed a bill in the General Assembly that would use casinos to pay for transportation projects, including work on the new Midtown Tunnel.
The bill has made its way through a Senate sub-committee and will get a full review on Monday.
"I've been out to Maryland, and they are able to fund all types of projects through that source of entertainment," Lucas said.
She filed six similar bills before moving on the one that would allow casinos if voters approved of it in a referendum.
Similar efforts have failed in the General Assembly in years past, with some believing casinos bring negative implications.
If it were to pass localities would have to compete for a venue.
Lucas says Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Hampton have all shown interest in the prospect.
