RICHMOND (AP) -- The city of Chesapeake has received the go-ahead to use three unused buildings as temporary jails to help ease overcrowding.
The state Board of Corrections on Wednesday approved a waiver for the city to use the buildings for no more than seven years until it comes up with a permanent plan. The move will enable Sheriff Jim O'Sullivan to transfer 192 low-risk inmates to the three buildings.
The Virginian-Pilot reports the inmates will be moved by early summer. O'Sullivan says he still needs to hire and train deputies for the buildings.
Chesapeake's 543-bed jail houses more than 1,000 inmates daily.
