RICHMOND -- A bill  to allow hunting on Sundays in Virginia is headed the State Senate after it passed the House of Delegates 71-27.

Senate Bill 154  repeals the ban on Sunday hunting on private lands with written permission from the owner - while still prohibiting hunting within 200 yards of a house of worship, the hunting of deer with dogs on Sunday and the hunting of bears.

Hunting advocates say the legislation encourages hunter retention and recruitment by allowing busy families the ability to teach hunting to the next generation, since school and sports activities often dominate Saturdays for children.

A long-standing Virginia law declares Sunday “a rest day for all species of wild bird and wild animal life."
