NORFOLK - Shots were fired while a crowd of people were at a Hallowen party near Old Dominion University.
Witnesses tell 13News Now that people were outside a house on 41st St. at Killam Avenue when several women started fighting.
ODU junior Anthony Williams says a man pulled out a gun and fired dozens of shots in the air.
"People were screaming and running down the street," said Evan Austin, also a junior at ODU.
Many students say they're fed up with the violence.
Norfolk police officers were in the area around 1:45 a.m., heard the gunfire, and responded to the scene as did ODU police.
An alert went out to ODU students and staff at 3:13 a.m.
Norfolk Police are investigating a report of shots fired in the street on West 41st Street at approximately 2 a.m. Nov. 1. Initial indications are that the incident stemmed from a man trying to break up a fight between two women, none of whom are affiliated with the ODU community. No injuries have been reported. The ODU Police and Norfolk Police will continue to maintain enhanced police patrols in this area.
There is no imminent threat to the campus. However, the community is encouraged to clear the streets so police can continue their investigation and is reminded to exercise caution. Anyone with information about this is encouraged to call the Norfolk Crime Line or the ODU Detective Unit at 683-4000.
No one was hurt.
Police have not said if an arrest has been made. Officers, meantime, are stepping up patrols.
