VIRGINIA BEACH--The Shamrock sports fest is happening at the Oceanfront this weekend.
“My grandkids are running. My daughter is running, and we’re having a great time,” Fred Jones said.
Three runs took place on Saturday: the Leprechaun dash for kids, the final mile for Operation Smile and the 8K. Sunday is the half and full marathon. “This is my first time here, and I’m supporting a friend, Chief Bratten in the Navy,” Kesha Burlington said.
In the spirit of the Shamrock and the Irish, wearing green was as popular as ever. The outfits did not seem to hamper anyone’s running efforts. “I just retired in January, and I warned my family for years I was going to dress like a leprechaun. This is a good time to do it,” Wesley Hill said.
There were 11,000 runners taking part in the Shamrock 8K. The course ran along Atlantic Avenue, and finished up on the boardwalk at Neptune Park. “I’m a medical volunteer, basically making sure everyone is doing alright out here today,” Zach Baker said.
Team Hoyt had a strong showing with some 20 teams taking part in the 8K run. Jenny Dugan says the team had a positive mission. “Yes you can! Anybody can come on out, and join us.”
