NEWPORT NEWS-- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will be campaigning in Newport News Monday evening.

The doors open at 3 p.m. at Victory Landing Park on 23rd Street, but the event begins at 5 p.m.

The event is open to the public and tickets can be picked up at the Newport News Victory Office at 12715 Warwick Blvd in Newport News or the Norfolk Victory Office at 193 W. Ocean View Ave.

Police say drivers may run in to traffic tie-ups in the area between 3:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Also, West Avenue between 23rd Street and 26th Street will be closed from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Earlier Monday, Romney spoke at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, where he said the risk of conflict in the Middle East has grown under President Barack Obama's leadership.

The Republican presidential contender is calling for a "change of course" in the region.

Romney assailed Obama's foreign policy in a speech Monday at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va. He had focused on the economy for much of the campaign is now seizing on foreign policy to help paint Obama as a weak leader who has limited America's influence on global affairs.

Romney is calling for the U.S. to take a more assertive role in Syria. He also wants new conditions on aid to Egypt and would impose tighter sanctions on Iran.

He says there is, quote, "a longing for American leadership in the Middle East."
