VIRGINIA BEACH -- During the Nor'easter, Debbie Joyner was working all night as an EMT with the Ocean Park Rescue Squad. While she was helping others, her squad's building was getting hammered with wind and flood waters.
Several inches of water flowed into the building, bringing in debris and soaking furniture. The roof also leaked in several areas.
"The damage is depressing," said Joyner. "It's just very depressing to see."
Rescue Squad President Brian Ledwell says it will cost at least $50,000 to repair the building. Ledwell says his groups relies mostly on donations to fund operations.
"It was just very devastating," said Rescue Squad President Brian Ledwell. "It will probably eat up most of our operational budget."
Right now the crew is operating out of a new fire and EMS station less than two miles down Shore Dr. but Joyner said it's not the same as being home.
"Time is of the essence on calls and a lot of calls can make or break it if you get there fast," said Joyner. "That's what's critical. We need to be home so we can get to the people that are close to our home fast."
Joyner encourages the community to get involved in the clean-up by making a donation.
They are holding a clean-up event Saturday starting at 10 a.m. at 3769 E. Stratford Rd.
