9:30 a.m. UPDATE: Crews have been able to access the pole at New Inlet and are working to replace the bad insulator now; hopeful that power will be restored to the island within the hour.
"CAPE HATTERAS, NC - The power is out in Frisco and Hatteras Villages.
Posts on the Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative Facebookpage say the island-wide outage occurred around 4 a.m. Monday.
Crews found a bad insulator south of New Inlet, but bridge construction and soggy ground was delaying the repair crew.
Just after 8:30 a.m., the company posted "We are currently working to power Frisco and Hatteras Villages with the Buxton Generation Plant. The plant is partially down due to maintenance, and due to the current load and switching requirements, it will not be possible to power Buxton, Avon, Salvo, Waves or Rodanthe at this time. In the meantime, crews are still working on the pole at New Inlet."
Repairs were expected to take several hours.
