NORFOLK - Work will continue all week to fix potholes, some described by drivers as being more like small craters, on the Interstates in Hampton Roads.

Dozens of holes opened up during the early Friday rain and the biggest problem area was I-264 in Norfolk from Waterside to the Broad Creek Bridge.

More than a dozen drivers had to pull off the road with damaged rims and flat ties after driving in the area from Waterside to the Broad Creek Bridge.

VDOT spokeswoman Lauren Hansen says they will handle legal claims from Friday's pothole damage directly because they veiw it as an emergency situation.

VDOT typically uses an interstate maintenance contractor to handle claims.

"It was a very unfortunate situation," said Hansen. "We are extremely sorry for anybody that was inconvienced by what happened Friday."

TME Enterprises, Incorporated, a VDOT contractor, started making temporary repairs Friday afternoon and that company and VDOT crews then worked all weekend.

Curtis Contracting of West Point began  emergency concrete repairs on I-264 east between the Claiborne Avenue overpass and Ballentine Boulevard and crews will work in the area all week each night from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following day.
